The top three books on spirituality at Amazon.com right now are:
1. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
2. Crystals for Beginners by Karen Frazier
3. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
I like to think of myself as one who keeps up with what is current with spirituality, but I must confess that I have read NONE of these books. There is one in my home, though. Does anyone want to guess which one? You'll never imagine.
Yeah, it is the book about crystals. :) That is because my wife and stepdaughter are very much into the meaning of crystals. They collect them, and, even more importantly, they connect with each other through them. I even get in on it from time to time...not that I am really into crystals. But I do love how much they love them.
Recently, we were in Portland, Maine, visiting with family, and I had an afternoon to myself. Walking through downtown Portland, I came across a crystal store and sauntered on in. I knew my stepdaughter (we'll call her Dee) would be starting high school soon and that she was understandably nervous and excited. I felt for her and wondered if I might find something that would offer her comfort and connect the two of us a bit more.
The retail clerk was a teenager who looked like she may have just passed her driver's license exam - that's how young she was. That was a good thing, though, because she was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about crystals. She was the perfect advisor! I told her that Dee would begin high school soon, and I wanted to get her something. She said, "Aww. I know the perfect thing."
Then she walked with purpose straight to the Citrine section and pulled a pair of earrings off the shelf. She informed me that Citrine sustains happiness and helps with emotions and self-esteem. Perfect! Who couldn't use that? I purchased them and later that week gave them to Dee. And it worked! She was happy, I was delighted, and we both had a sweet moment of connection.
While crystals don't mean much to me, I know they mean a lot to her. And knowing what is meaningful to her is meaningful to me. I think that is a vital component of any spirituality.
As for the other two books, I may buy them. Several of my CPE students have referenced the Four Agreements. I read a fantastic summary written by Nishith Goyal, which only whets my appetite more. I am not so sure about The Power of Now. Has anybody read it or the other two? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments section.
